Alex Spanos, Los Angeles Chargers Owner, Patriarch, Dies at 95

Los Angeles Chargers owner and founder of A.G. Spanos Companies, has passed away at the age of 95, the organization announced.

"Alex passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones on Tuesday morning," the Chargers said in a statement. "From humble beginnings to becoming the top apartment builder across the nation and the owner of an NFL franchise, Alex proved that dreams do come true."

Alexander Gus Spanos was born in 1923 to Greek immigrants. After working for years, he amassed enough wealth to purchase a majority stake in the San Diego Chargers in 1984. He eventually purchased the remaining shares of the team over the next ten years.

Only two months ago, Spanos' wife, Faye Spanos, passed away. The pair had been married since 1948.

The Chargers moved from San Diego to Los Angeles in early 2017. They currently play at the StubHub center while a new stadium they'll be sharing with the Los Angeles Rams opens in 2019.
