LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A remake of “The Predator” opened as the number one movie in North America this weekend, with an estimated $24 million debut.
The original “Predator” starred Arnold Schwarzenegger, opened in the summer of 1987, and went on to earn $59.7 million, said analyst Paul Dergarabedian at comScore.
“The Nun” was in second place, with an expected $18.2 million in tickets sold by tonight. Over 10 days, it was expected to gross $85 million.
Another suspense movie, “A Simple Favor,” opened in third place, with an estimated $16 million in premiere weekend ticket sales.
“White Boy Rick” opened in fourth place, as the Matthew McConaughey biopic of a 16-year-old drug kingpin was on track to sell $8.8 million in a limited release.
“Crazy Rich Asians” was number five, with an $8.7 million weekend and $149.6 million gross over five weeks.
Rounding out the top 10 films in the United States and Canada this weekend, as estimated by the studios and collated by comScore, were “Peppermint” ($6 million), “The Meg” ($3.8 million), “Searching” ($3.2 million), “Unbroken': Path To Redemption” ($2.4 million) and “Mission Impossible - Fallout” ($2.3 million).
