'Crazy Rich Asians' Strikes Box Office Gold, Again

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - “Crazy Rich Asians” remained the number one movie in North America this weekend, and an analyst said its performance might help bring the romantic comedy genre back in favor with Hollywood moviemakers.

The Warner Bros. release was on track for a $25 million weekend, bringing its 10-day U.S. and Canada cumulative sales to $76.8 million, according to studio estimates.

Analyst Paul Dergarabedian at comScore called that performance “amazing” and attributed it to good reviews and word-of-mouth.

Another Warner Bros film -- “The Meg” -- was in second place in this, its third weekend. The latest summer shark movie scored $13 million in sales this weekend, and it's 17-day North American total sales were pegged at $105.3 million.

Melissa McCarthy and some raunchy puppets debuted in third place, as the R-rated comedy “The Happytime Murders” opened this weekend to an estimated $10 million on sales.

“Mission: Impossible - Fallout” was on track to bring in $8 million over its fourth weekend. It has amassed $193.9 million in four weeks in North American, and $538.7 million over a month.

And in fifth place, Disney's “Christopher Robin” was estimated to have a $6.3 million weekend and $77.6 million domestic run over four weeks.

Rounding out the 10 most-popular films in the United States and Canada, as estimated by the studios and gathered by comScore, were Mile 22” ($6 million), “Alpha” ($5.6 million), “BlacKkKlansman” ($5.3 million), “A.X.L.” (debuting at $2.9 million) and “Slender Man” ($2.8 million).
