LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A voter registration day will be held at Los Angeles Unified School District high schools and Los Angeles Community College District campuses in September, Mayor Eric Garcetti today announced tonight.
Los Angeles is the nation's first city to commit to voter registration on public high school and community college campuses before the November elections, Garcetti said.
The initiative is the product of a partnership between Garcetti, California Secretary of State Alex Padilla, March For Our Lives, LAUSD and LACCD.
March For Our Lives was founded by students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in response to the Feb. 14 shooting that left 17 dead.
The group seeks passage of legislation mandating universal, comprehensive background checks for gun buyers, bans on semi-automatic assault rifles and high-capacity magazines, funding for the Centers for Disease Control to research the gun violence in America and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to have a digitized, searchable database of guns used in crimes.
“Young people in Los Angeles and across America are showing incredible leadership in confronting gun violence,” Garcetti said. “I am inspired by their commitment to improving our country and the democratic process, and proud that L.A. will lead in making it easier for our youth to register, vote and have their say in the future direction of our country."
The announcement preceded a roundtable conversation moderated by Garcetti with members of the March For Our Lives movement, who are currently on a national tour, and Garcetti's recently created Student Advisory Group on Gun Violence in Schools & Communities.
