Babysitter Pleads Not Guilty to Locking 6-Year-Old Boy in Sweltering Car

ALHAMBRA (CNS) - A babysitter pleaded not guilty today to a felony child abuse charge alleging she left a 6-year-old boy locked inside a car for more than an hour while she had lunch at an Alhambra restaurant.

Helen Law, 60, of Alhambra, was allegedly babysitting the boy on June 12 when she left him in a car parked in the 700 block of East Valley Boulevard.

Alhambra police said a passerby spotted the child in the car around 2:20 p.m. and called police, and responding officers said the boy was ``sweating profusely and crying.”

Police were able to open the car and rescue the boy, but officers said the temperature inside the vehicle had reached 120 degrees.

Law is due back in court in Alhambra Aug. 30, when a date will be set for a hearing to determine if there is enough evidence for her to stand trial. She faces up to six years in prison if convicted, according to the District Attorney's Office.
