Forest Fire Moves Deeper Into San Bernardino Mountains

A forest fire that's shut down a stretch of a state highway in California's San Bernardino Mountains is growing.  U.S. Forest Service fire commanders say the Valley Fire has now charred 1,000-acres and is moving north and east, deeper into the San Gorgonio Wilderness.

It's just five percent contained and is threatening 500 homes.  The entire town of Forest Falls has been evacuated.

Firefighters say rain that fell yesterday on the west side of the fire did not affect the upper fire area.  Highway 38 is closed from Bryant Street in Yucaipa to Lake Williams Drive, south of Big Bear.
