Brazil has advanced to the semifinals four of the past six World Cups, winning the championship in 1994 and 2002 and finishing second in 1998. It finished fourth in the 2014 World Cup. Its teams led by Pele won the World Cup in 1958, 1962 and 1970.

Brazil is second in the rankings compiled by FIFA, soccer's international governing body. Belgium is ranked third.
