LOS ANGELES (CNS) - An ex-girlfriend of Charlie Sheen who sued the actor alleging he exposed her to HIV will have to take her case to arbitration, a judge said in affirming a tentative ruling.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Randolph Hammock issued his preliminary ruling in favor of Sheen on June 19, then heard arguments from attorneys for the actor and the woman the next day. He then took the case under submission before issuing a final ruling on Thursday.
Hammock denied a defense motion to dismiss the case and instead said he would retain jurisdiction. He set a status conference for June 2019.
Neither Sheen, 52, nor the ex-girlfriend are identified by name in the suit, which was filed in June 2017. However, Sheen, referred to in the complaint as ``confidential male defendant,” learned he was HIV-positive in 2011 and gave national television interviews about his medical status in 2015 and 2016.
The plaintiff is identified only as Jane Doe and is described as a Russian emigre. Sheen's attorneys said Doe signed a non-disclosure agreement that included an arbitration clause for settling disputes.
Hammock scolded Sheen's lawyer in his tentative ruling for his characterization of Doe in his court papers, saying the defense attorney ``needs to realize that publicly slut-shaming the plaintiff, as he needlessly does in the petition to compel arbitration, wins no favor with this court.”
