'Incredibles 2' Is Incredible, Too

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Disney Studios continued its summer domination of the North American movie trade, as “Incredibles 2” opened with what one analyst called a “stunning $180 million opening weekend performance.”

“The biggest-ever debut for an animated film, and the best ever opening in Pixar's illustrious history,” gushed comScore's Paul Dergarabedian.

He said “Incredibles 2” was also:

-- the eighth all-time industry debut,

-- the largest debut ever for a PG-rated film,

-- the second biggest June opening ever, and

-- the third biggest debut of 2018.

The family yarn was on track to sell $231.5 million in tickets worldwide this weekend, with $180 million of that here in the United States and Canada.

“Ocean's 8” was in second place on its second weekend, with a $19.6 estimate this time and a running total sales estimate of $79.2 million domestically, plus $37.1 million overseas.

And an R-rated comedy -- “Tag” -- debuted in third place, with an estimated $14.6 million splash.

Rounding out the top 10 movies in the United States and Canada, as estimated by the studios and collated by comScore, were “Solo: A Star Wars Story” ($9 million), “Deadpool 1” ($8.8 million), “Hereditary” ($7 million), “Superfly” (debuting at $8.4 million), “Avenger: Infinity War” ($5.3 million, “Adrift” ($2.1 million) and “Book Club” ($1.9 million).
