Well it looks like all the hard work to recall Democrat Josh Newman worked. The Orange County state senator will no longer hold his spot as former Republican Assemblywoman Ling Ling Chang will be moving in, sorry Josh. Newman focused his campaign almost entirely on his support of the gas tax, which nearly two-thirds of voters chose to recall.
Replacing him with Chang keeps Senate Democrats below a two-thirds supermajority needed to pass tax and fee increases.
Carl DeMaio, chairman of Reform California and a sponsor of the recall said in a statement according to the San Francisco Chronicle, that the vote shows that politicians who supported the gas tax "will pay the price at the ballot box."
With 77 percent of precincts reporting, the recall effort had passed by a 20-point landslide with Ling Ling Chang leading the ballot.
In California, the campaign against the gas tax is expected to be central to the Republicans’ November campaign.
DeMaio and Chang talked to John and Ken about the election and the victory against the gas tax. Listen to the interviews below.
