SmartWater Being Used To Catch Thieves

The Monterey County Sheriff's office has a new tool to catch thieves.  Commander Jonathan Thornburg says SmartWater technology and a UV light will tell deputies if a suspect has touched stolen property.

The Central Valley is home to many farms with expensive equipment, which can often be targeted.  When the security system is set off, it sprays a colorless liquid that is illuminated by the light now installed in the sheriff's office.  You can apply the liquid to any valuable property and it'll transfer to hands and clothing for up to five years before needing another application.

Merced and Tulare counties also use SmartWater and San Joaquin authorities are hoping to adopt it very soon.
