HUNTINGTON BEACH (CNS) - A small plane whose pilot reported engine trouble while heading for John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana made a safe emergency landing this afternoon on a residential street in Huntington Beach, authorities said.
Police were notified about 4:55 p.m. of a plane down in the area of Hamilton Avenue and Newland Street and upon arrival two minutes later found the single-engine plane had made a safe emergency landing, Huntington Beach police Officer Angela Bennett said.
The plane was a Cessna 172 that landed about five miles southwest of John Wayne Airport, according to Ian Gregor of the Federal Aviation Administration. The pilot, believed to be the only one aboard the aircraft, notified air traffic controllers that she was having engine trouble before making the landing, Bennett said.
Images from the scene showed the plane just short of the T-intersection at Newland Street. Bennett said the pilot managed to avoid power lines and there were no reports of injuries or damage.
Hamilton Avenue was closed between Magnolia and Newland streets, she said.
