Five people are dead after a Puerto Rico Air National Guard plane crashed near a highway in Savannah, Georgia outside of the Savannah/Hilton Head airport. The FAA said WC-130 was on a training missing and was bound for Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona.
Mark Jones told the Savannah Morning News that he was near the intersection when the plane "stalled and just went almost flat" before exploding upon impact in the middle of the highway.
“I looked down and then looked back up and it didn’t look like it nosedived, but it almost looked like it stalled and just went almost flat right there in the middle of the highway.”
Nobody was injured on the ground, but the crash did knock out power at two nearby schools.
Officials have not determined what caused the plane to crash shortly after take-off.
Photos and videos posted on social media show thick, black smoke which can be seen from miles away.
Officials at Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport said the crash was causing delays at the airport and advised travelers to check the status of their flight with their airline.
