Mother, Daughter Found Dead in Whittier Home

WHITTIER (CNS) - Authorities today investigated the deaths of two women -- a 95-year-old woman and her 76-year-old daughter -- whose bodies were found in their Whittier home.

The deaths were reported about 8:45 p.m. Monday in the 12400 block of Beverly Drive, according to the coroner's office.

Angelina Tunacao and her daughter Miriam Tunacao died at the scene, the coroner's office reported. Autopsies were pending to determine cause of death.

Police told reporters that there were no obvious signs of foul play.

A relative of the women told ABC7 that the women may have died after eating a plant they grew in their garden.

``They ingested/cooked a stew with what they thought was spinach," Jason Billones told the station. ``We think it might actually be called tree tobacco.''

An examination of the plants and stew that Billiones' aunt and his great-grandmother prepared was part of the death investigation, the man said.
