Arnold Schwarzenegger Undergoes "Somewhat Experimental" Heart Surgery

Arnold Schwarzenegger had to undergo emergency open heart surgery. The 70-year-old actor was taken to Cedars-Sinai hospital for a catheter valve replacement which TMZ described as a "somewhat experimental" surgery. Schwarzenegger reportedly suffered complications during the surgery and doctors were forced to perform open heart surgery.

The surgery lasted several for hours and he is in stable condition.

This was not the first time that he has undergone heart surgery. He traveled to Mexico to have an aortic valve replaced in 1997 to correct a congenital heart problem.

"I've never felt sick or had any symptoms at all, but I knew I'd have to take care of this condition sooner or later," he said in a statement at the time, according to the Los Angeles Times. "I said to the doctors, 'Let's do it now, while I'm young and healthy.' They agreed this was the way to go."

He spoke about that surgery in 2001, after he broke six ribs in a motorcycle crash.

“It was very painful, much more painful than the heart surgery,” he said at the time. “A rib breaking is, like, the worst.”
