San Francisco's ICE Spokesman Quits

The spokesman for San Francisco's ICE office has resigned after the recent sweep, saying that he can't do his job with integrity while the Trump administration spreads lies about the operation.

James Schwab spoke with The Chronicle claiming that he's frustrated with statements made by Jeff Sessions that nearly 800 illegal immigrants escaped potential custody because Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf gave a public 'heads up' on February 24th, the night before the execution of the operation. Schwab requested that the agency correct the number, which he believed to be much lower.

“I quit because I didn’t want to perpetuate misleading facts,” said Schwab, 38, who was hired in 2015 and resigned last week. “I asked them to change the information. I told them that the information was wrong, they asked me to deflect, and I didn’t agree with that. Then I took some time and I quit.”

Schaaf praised Schwab’s action. “I commend Mr. Schwab for speaking the truth while under intense pressure to lie,” she said. “Our democracy depends on public servants who act with integrity and hold transparency in the highest regard.”
