Papa John's and NFL Split Up

They are never ever ever getting back together.

Papa John's announced today that they are no longer the 'official pizza of the NFL'. The most recent NFL season was embroiled in controversies and the pizza chain got caught up in the protests of the National Anthem after former CEO, John Schnatter, criticized kneeling players. The backlash against his comments ultimately forced Schnatter to step down from the company he created.

Confirming their split, both companies made a statement to ESPN:

“The NFL and Papa John’s have made a mutual decision to shift from their official league sponsorship to a focus on partnerships with 22 local NFL teams, presence in broadcast and digital media, and key personalities in the sport.”

Papa John's became the official pizza for the NFL in 2010 and is the first sponsor to sever ties with the league.
