Earths Magnetic Fields Are Making a Switch-a-roo

North and south are making a big switch!

It has been 750,000 years since our magnetic fields were reversed.

The Earth's magnetic directions actually are supposed to reverse every 450,000 years. So our magnetic fields are about 750,000 years overdue for a reversal.

Magnetic fields protect us from the suns radiation however during the shift there can possibly be some weak spots. Certain satellites have already seen a solar radiation bump.

However, the entire transition can last up to thousands of years.

Jet Propulsion Laboratory senior research scientist, Erik Ivins, joins the show to discuss the magnetic process.
