EAST LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A suspect who was shot and killed in a deputy- involved shooting in East Los Angeles allegedly got into a sheriff's patrol car and tried to run a deputy down, authorities said today.

The shooting was reported around 10 p.m. Tuesday in the 5000 block of East Third Street, near Beverly Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Deputies received a call about a suspicious man in the parking structure of an apartment complex, looking inside vehicles.

The arriving deputies saw the suspect, who appeared to try to hide from them as they exited their vehicle, said Deputy Trina Schrader.

When the deputies attempted to contact and detain the suspect, he ran past them and appeared to be running toward their patrol vehicle, she said.

Fearing the suspect would attempt to enter the patrol vehicle, one deputy fired a stun gun at the suspect, which was ineffective, according to Schrader.

The suspect then entered the patrol vehicle and drove in the direction of the second deputy, at which time a deputy-involved shooting occurred, she said.

The suspect was struck in his upper body by the gunfire and pronounced dead at the scene, Schrader said.

No civilians or deputies were injured.
