California will be the first state to get safe injection sites this summer. Two supervised centers in San Francisco would provide a safe place for drug users to shoot up and dispose their needles. The sites are yet to be determined, but they will be located at non-profits that offer drug addiction services.
The safe injection sites are on track to open in July. State Senator Scott Wiener says the sites may be controversial, but they're needed to get people off the streets, into safe spaces, and to avoid overdoses and infections.
