The decision to spank a child as a form of discipline has been polarizing for some time. Parents have to decide how they want to punish their children and celebrities are no exception. American Idol star Kelly Clarkson has reignited the spanking debate this week after admitting on a Rochester NY based radio show that she and her husband practice this form of behavioral correction.
The singer explained, "I'm from the south, y'all, so like, we get spankings. So, my parents spanked me and I did fine in life and I feel fine about it." Clarkson has two children, daughter River Rose is 2, and her son Remington is 1.
"I'm not above a spanking which people aren't necessarily into and I don't mean like hitting her hard, I just mean a spank."
Clarkson stated that she has a difficult time disciplining her children while being in the public eye because everyone has an opinion about how she should be parenting. "So, that's the tricky thing, when you're in public 'cause then people are like, you know ... they think that's wrong or something, but I find nothing wrong with a spanking."
Every generation of parents has their own methods and expectations about how to raise children and while many disagree with the concept of physical punishment, a recent ABC News poll found that the public by a 2-1 margin actually approves of spanking and that half of the respondents admitted to doing it to their own children when needed.
