SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A California Republican ousted as the party's state Assembly leader is starting a group to back conservatives who no-longer feel at home in the GOP.
Assemblyman Chad Mayes of Yucca Valley gave up his leadership post last year under pressure from the GOP base after he worked with Democrats to pass a climate change bill.
Mayes said Tuesday the Republican Party will be doomed to irrelevance in California if it doesn't welcome new ideas and compromise with majority Democrats. He says the GOP must push conservative solutions to issues that matter to voters including immigration, poverty and the environment.
The group is called New Way California. Mayes declined to discuss specifics about how the group will look to influence the Republican Party.
