LA County has First Case of Sexually-Transmitted Zika Virus

A woman is the first in Los Angeles County to become infected with the Zika virus via sexual contact.

The LA County Department of Public Health says a woman contracted the virus after having sex with her male partner, who was infected in November after a trip to Mexico.

Since 2015, all but four of the recorded 125 Zika patients have contracted it through a bite from an infected mosquito while traveling abroad.

There have been no cases of Zika linked to local mosquitos, however the LACDPH says the Aedes mosquit, which can carry Zika, is found throughout the county.

The department suggests using condoms or abstain from sex for six months if the male partner is diagnosed with Zika; if the woman is diagnosed the the couple should abstain for eight weeks.
