LONG BEACH (CNS) - A shooting at a Long Beach law office left two men dead today, including the shooter who is believed to have killed himself, and at least one other man wounded.
Police responded at 2:25 p.m. to a report of an active shooter at a law office in the 300 block of East San Antonio Drive in the Bixby Knolls area, police said.
By 3:30 p.m., police said there was no longer an active-shooter threat at the location, and they later described the shooting as an act of workplace violence. The two men who died were both lawyers at the law firm, KCAL9 reported. One other man, also an attorney, was wounded and drove himself to a hospital, KCAL9 reported.
``The third victim was shot in his upper chest,'' Long Beach police Sgt. Brad Johnson told City News Service. ``He's in serious condition but is expected to survive. The gunman we believe died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.''
A source told CBS2 reporters that the gunman was recently fire from the law firm and returned today during a holiday event. The gunman also reportedly told most of the employees to leave the building before he shot the two men and then himself.
Police cordoned off the area and closed streets surrounding the business. Johnson declined to identify the law firm where the three men worked.
A motive for the shooting was unknown.
Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia wrote on Twitter that he had been briefed on the shooting, and it ``appears to be a workplace homicide.''
``Both the shooter and a victim are dead,'' Garcia said. ``One other person was shot but is in hospital in stable condition. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families.''
The identities of the deceased were withheld pending family notification.
