A San Diego area firefighter taking on the monstrous Thomas Fire has died.
The Santa Barbara County Fire Department released the following press statement today which announced the unfortunate death of a state firefighter:
Initially unnamed, the victim of the blaze was later identified as Cal Fire San Diego Unit Fire Apparatus Engineer Cory Iverson.
The 32 year-old Iverson is the first professional state firefighter to die in the field this year. He leaves behind his pregnant wife and 2 year-old baby girl.

According to Cal Fire, the Thomas Fire has scorched 242,500 acres, which amounts to 379 square miles. The fire has covered more ground than the city of San Diego.
