Rye Fire Burns 7,000 Acres, Five Percent Contained

The Rye Fire in Santa Clarita has burned about 7,000 acres and was five percent contained fire officials said.

No injuries have been reported, but evacuations have been ordered for about 5,000 people from around 1,300 homes in the area. The fire also prompted the closure of sections of the Golden State (5) Freeway and state Route 126 since it began Tuesday morning.

The 5 Freeway was closed in both directions temporarily near state Route 126, but the freeway was re-opened by mid-afternoon Tuesday. Rye Canyon Loop was also closed, as well as state Route 126 from Copperhill Drive to the Golden State Freeway.

Authorities ordered evacuations around Rye Canyon Loop and at the Valencia Travel Village RV park in Castaic.

Evacuation centers have been established at Valencia High School at 27801 Dickason Drive and at College of the Canyons at 6455 Rockwell Canyon Road.
