Special counsel Robert Mueller has charged former national security adviser Michael Flynn with making false statements to the FBI, according to a court documents filed early Friday morning in a Washington D.C. federal court.
Flynn is the first Trump administration official to be charged as part of Mueller's investigation into the possible collusion between the Russian government and members of Trump's campaign team and fourth overall. Mueller's investigation is also looking into potential obstruction of justice, as well as financial crimes.
The former Trump adviser is scheduled to appear in court for a plea hearing at 10:30 a.m. EST where he is expected to plead guilty. The Justice Department says the hearing will take place at a Washington D.C. federal courthouse in front of U.S. District Judge Rudolph Contreras.
Court documents reveal that Flynn has been charged with a single count of "willfully and knowingly" making false statements to the FBI on Jan. 24.
According to prosecutors, Flynn falsely stated to the FBI that he had not discussed sanctions with then-Russian Ambassador to the United States Sergey Kislyak.
Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and deputy Rick Gates were also indicted last month as part of Mueller's investigation. They both pleaded not guilty. George Papadopoulous, a Trump campaign foreign policy adviser, pleaded guilty for making a false statement to the FBI over his conversations with officials connected to the Russian government.
