NBC Fires Matt Lauer After 'Inappropriate Sexual Behavior' Complaint

NBC News has fired Matt Lauer after receiving what NBC News President Andrew Lack called in a memo "a detailed complaint from a colleague about inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace."

Lauer's Today show co-host Savannah Guthrie revealed the news on Wednesday morning's show, adding that she was heartbroken for Lauer, whom she called her "dear, dear friend," but also for the woman who filed the complaint against him.

Details are starting to emerge about the complaint that got him fired. Page Six reports that Lauer sexually harassed a female staffer while they were covering the Olympics in 2012. The unidentified woman filed an HR complaint on Monday (Novmber 27) night, and the decision to fire Lauer was made on Tuesday by NBC News chairman Andy Lack.

Yashar Ali, a reporter for Huffington Post and New York Magazine, says that he and other reporters have been hearing from multiple women about Lauer's behavior over the past few months. He tweeted that the women wanted to remain anonymous because they were terrified of the former Today show host.

Variety offers more stunning details of Lauer's disgusting and shameful behavior around female coworkers following a months long investigation into him. In one instance, he gave a female coworker a sex toy and an "explicit note about how he wanted to use it on her." Another woman claimed he called her into his office and dropped his pants and then "he reprimanded her for not engaging in a sexual act."

Lauer had been co-anchor of Today for almost 21 years. He first took on the role on January 6, 1997.
