'Major' Gas Leak Plugged in Anaheim

ANAHEIM (CNS) - A ``major'' natural gas leak at a construction site in Anaheim triggered evacuations of several surrounding blocks today, while others were instructed to shelter in place until the line was capped.

Firefighters responded to reports of the two-inch gas line rupture at 11:08 a.m. in the 2000 block of East Orangewood Avenue, forcing evacuations in the 2100 block of South State College Boulevard, the 2200 block of East Orangewood Avenue, and the 2100 block of South Dupont Drive, according to Anaheim police Sgt. Daron Wyatt.

A Sempra Energy crew arrived around 12:10 p.m. and capped the line, according to Wyatt. No one was injured.

About 35 to 50 people were evacuated from two commercial buildings and about 75 sheltered in place for about 45 minutes to an hour in other area businesses, he said.
