Indian man survives knife to the back of the neck

A 43-year-old Indian man is very lucky to be alive after he was taken to the hospital with a massive knife stuck in the back of his neck.

Venkata Ram Prasad was on his way home on his bicycle when an attacker on a scooter stabbed him and sped off.

The police found Prasad lying in a pool of blood and rushed him to Columbia Asia Hospital in Hebbal with the knife still lodged in his neck.

A CT scan showed that the knife pierced his spinal cord, making it harder for doctors to administer anesthesia because he would have had to be turned over.

Doctors were able to administer the anesthesia anyway and began surgery. Dr. Prasanna Kumar said:

“We made sure the surgery was done without any movement of the neck and without any upper body movement. He had also suffered paralysis of the left hand.

Dr. Ananth Rao, unit head at the hospital, said:

"It’s good the knife was not removed at the local hospital as he wouldn’t have survived the excessive bleeding."

Doctors say Prasad is now back on his feet and has recovered.
