LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A woman, a little girl and a baby were found naked, unconscious and covered in white powder this morning in the parking lot of a South Los Angeles market, and the baby later died, police said.
Believed to be 1 to 2 months old, the baby girl was pronounced dead at the scene, said Capt. Michael Rimkunas of the Los Angeles Police Department's Newton Division. The other two victims, an 8-year-old girl and a 26-year-old woman believed to be the girls' mother, were taken to a hospital, where the woman is in critical condition and the girl is stable.
Police went to South San Pedro and East 23rd streets at 1:44 a.m. in response to a report of a female heard screaming, police said. The three victims were found naked on the ground of the Numero Uno parking lot, covered in a white powder and not breathing, Rimkunas said.
It wasn't immediately clear what happened to the victims or what injuries they may have suffered.
A HazMat team was at the scene processing the white powder to determine what it is, Rimkunas said, adding that there was ``quite a lot of the substance'' on the ground.
Rimkunas said the victims showed no obvious signs of injury. Police plan to review surveillance video at the scene and are looking for witnesses.
