Many Bay Area students found their classes canceled today thanks to smoky conditions resulting from the North Bay wildfires. School district officials in parts of the North Bay, East Bay, and Peninsula say they chose not to hold class out of health and safety concerns.
A "Spare the Air" alert and health advisory were in effect for the region through Sunday. Shelters providing filtered air are also being offered for residents who can't handle the smokey air.
Available shelters are located here:
- San Francisco Main Library, 100 Larkin, 9 am to 8 pm
- Chinatown Branch Library, 1135 Powell, 10 am to 9 pm
- Mission Bay Branch Library, 960 Fourth Street, 10 am to 6 pm
- Glen Park Branch Library, 2825 Diamond, 10 am to 6 pm
Where there is school today, teachers are keeping students indoors at all times and outdoor activities and games have been called off.
