The murder rate is way down in Los Angeles. Statistics released by the city showed a total of 59 homicides in June, July, and August, far lower than the number of killings that's been seen over the last few years.

L.A. Police Chief Charlie Beck said that the number of murders seen in Los Angeles during the summer months has typically been in the 70s or 80s. Beck credits extra patrols and officers in neighborhoods that have been hit hardest by violence, as well as looking for guns and focusing on gang-inspired violence. The LAPD confiscated nearly 4,000 guns in July.

Nearly sixty percent of all murders in L.A. are gang related.
