The Credit Bureau Blues: How do the "big 3" vary?

Unless you've been hiding in a cave, you've heard about the massive security breach of credit bureau Equifax.  Actually, you're probably one of the 143 million Americans whose data was compromised.

But why was Equifax targeted specifically, and not the others?  Is there even any difference?

The bureaus

  • Experian plc
  • Equifax, Inc.
  • TransUnion

What they provide

Credit scores.  Duh.  But each bureau has their own method(s) of calculating our scores, and each can provide a different score depending on the models used.

Models?

Yep.  You might know them as FICO, VantageScore, or NextGen.

Which to choose?

It's up to you.  Each of the companies will provide legitimate information and work with legitimate lenders.  Your score will be more or less the same across the board, but any differences may make or break your desired credit score / range...
