Murder Suspect Flagged By ICE But Not Picked Up Before Killing

(Santa Rosa, CA)  --  The Sonoma County Sheriff's Department says it notified federal immigration authorities, as requested, about the pending release of a domestic violence inmate who is now accused of murdering his girlfriend.  But it says ICE agents never came to pick up Nery Israel Estrada-Margos and he was released on bail on August 3rd.

Last Friday morning, the 38-year-old Estrada-Margos turned himself in for the beating death of 42-year-old Veronica Cabrera-Ramirez in their Russell Avenue apartment.  The department says it has responded to 139 ICE detainers over the last year, but ICE agents have only picked up a small fraction of the inmates before release.
