Oakland encourages former inmates to apply for new police commission

Oakland wants former inmates to apply for it's new police commission to oversee how the city disciplines officers accused of misconduct.

A notice on the city's website says:

“Must be an Oakland resident. Must be at least 18 years old. Formerly incarcerated individuals encouraged to apply.”

The head of the Oakland Police Officers Association, Barry Donelan, said encouraging ex-cons to help discipline officers for misconduct was "extremely distasteful."

The voter-approved police commission prohibits former and current Oakland cops from assisting on the commission.

Former inmates have until June 30th to apply.
