South Los Angeles Shooting Suspect in Custody

The suspect who allegedly fired shots at police officers in South Los Angeles on Thursday was taken into custody early Friday morning according to the LAPD's twitter account. 

The gunfire began just after 7 pm in the area of 49th and San Pedro streets. Officers took cover and returned fire. 

It was unclear if the man firing at police was hit. 

Authorities shut down the neighborhood while they conducted a search for the suspect. Some residents were unable to get back into their home until late Thursday evening. 

Around 12:40 am, police announced on Twitter that they had taken the suspect into custody. 

No officers were injured in the exchange. 

Police haven't said if the officers who were fired upon were in uniform or if some kind of encounter led to the shooting.
