Some new international flights could be coming for passengers at John Wayne Airport. The airport is looking into being declared a "Port of Entry" by governmental authorties. The reason? The feds will pick up the tab for services like customs and border patrol.
Spokeswoman Diane Thompson being declared a "Port of Entry" would take the burden off of airlines to pay for the services.
"It costs more for the carriers to serve international passengers here. And that's why we have so few international flights."
She says right now airlines have to pay for customs and border patrol services. She says that limits how many international flights the airport has.
"If the number of international flights out of John Wayne were to change, it would be limited to additional cities to Canada and to Mexico," Thompson said.
