Police shoot dog attacking woman in Long Beach

Long Beach Police shot and killed a dog after it attacked a woman according to authorities. 

Officers responded to a call that a woman was screaming for help after being attacked by a dog that appeared to be a pit bull authorities said. 

Bystanders were attempting to get the dog off the woman, but were unsuccessful, police said. 

Officers attempted to pull the dog off the woman, but found themselves unable to separate the animal attacking the woman. After the dog continued to prove aggressive, an officer shot the dog at least twice, killing it. The woman was taken to a hospital for bites on her leg. 

No one has stepped forward to claim ownership of the dog. The animal was taken to a local vet to determined if it was chipped and could be identified. 

Police say they do not know what prompted the attack.
