The tallest thermometer in the world could be getting some competition as the best tourist trap on the way to Vegas. Lancaster's mayor says a Chinese company contacted the city about possibly building a 10-story tall statue of the Buddha in the desert community.
An unnamed company is willing to spend up to $31 million to build the statue and cultural center according to Mayor R. Rex Parris. He says the company contacted city officials about two months ago with the offer.
The Buddha statue would bring thousands of visitors to the sleepy desert community - especially since it's on a route to Las Vegas which is a huge draw for Asian tourists.
The Buddha is the primary figure in Buddhism and is recognized by Buddhists as an enlightened teacher who was able to attain full Buddhahood and share his insights to help sentient beings end rebirth and suffering.
