A suspect was shot and killed and a sheriff's deputy was wounded after an occupant of a white sedan opened fire on officers following a traffic stop in Compton late Wednesday night.
Deputy Trina Schrader says the car had been pulled over for traffic violations when one of the occupants opened fire on the two deputies. One deputy was hit by the gunfire and was hospitalized, and is expected to survive.
Both deputies returned fire on the suspect, who was shot and later died at a hospital.
Two women, who were also in the car, were detained by detectives and interviewed. The suspect's handgun was recovered at the scene.
The second deputy suffered minor injuries after falling down during the confrontation.
Streets surrounding the incident were closed while deputies investigated the shooting.
