LAPD Motorcycle Officer Hurt in Freeway Crash

UPDATE: All lanes have been reopened on the southbound 5 at Lyons Avenue in Santa Clarita following this morning's accident.

A Los Angeles Police Department motorcycle officer has been hospitalized following a collision with a car. All lanes of southbound Interstate 5 have been shut down.

The California Highway Patrol says the crash occurred early Tuesday morning near Santa Clarita. Jeff Baugh and the KFI in the Sky took photos of the backup which showed commuter traffic backed up for miles.

The LAPD tweeted out a photo of the motorcycle on its side with an update that the officer was currently in stable condition.

The injured officer was on his way to work this morning when a blue plastic tarp was blown off a vehicle. The officer lost control of his motorcycle after he was "hit by the tarp" and then run over by a truck.

Chief Beck told KFI's Eric Leonard that the officer will undergo multiple surgeries and that they're concerned about his physical state.
