Man sues American Airlines for being seated next to 'grossly obese' passengers for 14 hours

An Australian man is suing American Airlines for more than $74,000 in damages for being seated next to two passengers he claims were "grossly obese," on a 14-hour-flight from Sydney to Los Angeles.

67-year-old Michael Anthony Taylor said American Airlines refused to let him move seats. He said he was left "crouching, kneeling, bracing, or standing" for the majority of his December 2015 flight.

Taylor said the two larger passengers "encroached on his space" and made his scoliosis worse. He also said he suffered potentially permanent lower and upper back injuries and neck bruising.

He said:

"I don’t hold any malice towards the people in the seats next to me. The airline could have put me in a crew seat or moved people around, but they did nothing.”
