People Are Walking Around With $1 Bills That Are Worth Thousands. Here’s What To Look For

Cash may be king, but cards have taken over the heavy duty spending for most folks who go shopping these days. Most people don't even carry cash in their wallets thanks to the multiple ways we can give money to someone. Between our credit and debit cards, Apple Pay and Venmo, Cash is losing its luster for many.

But, what if that dollar bill in your pocket was worth far more than just 100 pennies (Four quarters? Ten dimes? Twenty nickles?)? It's possible thanks to a new site that collects 'rare' bills with serial numbers that have unique patterns.

The serial numbers assigned to our bills aren't exactly random. Modern currency features two letters at the beginning with the first letter identifying which Federal Reserve Bank issued the note. The second letter indicates which printing, while the last letter in the serial number has no real significance.

But it's the numerical patterns found in between those letters that people are willing to pay big bucks for.

CoolSerialNumbers.com has published a list of desirable serial numbers on dollar bills that they're willing to pay lots of money to obtain. Some bills with the right serial numbers have gone for hundreds, even thousands more than their face value.

Some of the things to look for while digging through your wallet:

  • 7 in a row of the same number like 29999999
  • 7 of the same number 99990999
  • Super radars like 01111110, 10000001, or 80000008
  • Repeaters like 67676767
  • Double quads like 11110000
  • 0 and 9 binaries like 00090000
  • 1 and 8 binaries like 81188118

The full list of number that could turn that $1 into $100 (or more!) can be found on their site at CoolSerialNumbers.com.
