End of the line for LA Metro's giant tunneling machine

It's the end of the line for Harriet, the LA Metro's tunnel boring machine.

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority held a ‘retirement party’ to commemorate the enormous machine that helped complete the second of twin tunnels under Crenshaw Boulevard for the region’s latest rail line.

She was named in honor of Harriet Tubman, the pre-Civil War abolitionist who helped slaves escape from the South through a network known as the Underground Railroad.

The name came from a student contest run by Metro.

The $2 billion light rail is expected to open in fall 2019. Metro hopes that the Crenshaw/LAX connection will revolutionize how people get to the airport.
