Manhattan Manhole Explosion

Fires and blasts in New York had many citizens frightened this morning as multiple manholes exploded.

The initial explosion happened before 8 am, near the popular bookstore The Strand.

All of the windows of the bookstore and the apartments above it were blown out.

The New York fire department closed the streets and kept people away to prevent injury if another explosion happened.

NBC News journalist was on the Staten Island bus when she heard the explosion.

"From what people heard, it sounded like a bomb. You felt it..."I was listening to music and I still heard it. My right ear is hurting."

Initial reports say three manholes may have blown and the cause of the fires is still under investigation.
