LA utility customers to receive info on billing settlement

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Department of Water and Power customers will soon be able to recover their money from a landmark class-action settlement.

A court-appointed independent monitor has verified that refunds or credits are due to about  800,000 Los Angeles ratepayers who were overcharged under a botched billing system upgrade four years ago.

The Los Angeles Times reports Tuesday that  starting this week, customers will receive packets that detail what types of refunds may be claimed.

Most refunds will be provided automatically. In other situations, ratepayers will need to provide documentation, or additional fieldwork will be required to verify a payment amount.

The utility's new computerized service was supposed to integrate billing, service calls and other operations. But after the 2013 rollout, the utility was flooded with complaints about inaccurate   and inflated bills.
