Off-duty officer who fired gun in California front yard sued

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The parents of a 13-year-old boy who scuffled with an off-duty police officer in Southern California who fired a gun have filed a lawsuit.

The scuffle and gunfire on the Anaheim front lawn of Los Angeles police Officer Kevin Ferguson last month was captured in a pair of videos that went viral, though the shot was fired into the ground and no one was hurt.

The Orange County Register reported Wednesday that the boy's parents Alma Jimenez and John Dorscht are suing Ferguson, alleging negligence, assault and battery, false imprisonment and excessive force.

The suit, which seeks unspecified damages, does not name either Anaheim or Los Angeles police.

Ferguson's attorney Larry Hanna has said Ferguson feared for his own and his sick father's safety because of the group of teens that were on his lawn.

Los Angeles and Anaheim police are investigating the confrontation
