1 dead, several hurt in Hollywood stabbing, police shooting

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Authorities say one person is dead and at least four hurt in a stabbing and police shooting at a Jack in the Box in Hollywood.

Police say officers were answering a report of a stabbing at around 2 p.m. Tuesday when they saw someone stabbing people inside the restaurant.

Officer Tony Im says the officers opened fire but he has no word on whether they hit the attacker.

Fire Department spokeswoman Margaret Stewart says three people were taken to the hospital, a woman declined treatment and a fifth person died at the scene.

Some reports say the man appeared to be mentally unstable.There are many homeless people in the area, which is on Sunset Boulevard. They often are seen in and around the fast-food restaurant.
