Widow Escapes Prison for Killing Bell Gardens Mayor

The widow of former Bell Gardens mayor Daniel Crespo was sentenced Friday to three months in jail and five years probation for killing him. Lyvette Crespo admitted she shot her husband during an argument in the couple's town house in 2014, but said she was defending herself and her son. The sentence had been recommended as part of a plea bargain. Her son, Daniel, Jr., said in court he could have been killed that day. He told L.A. Superior Court Judge Kathleen Kennedy before sentencing that he lived in fear of his father, and no one outside the home knew what it was like to live with him. "That's bullshit," said Daniel Crespo's brother Willie, who urged the judge to send Lyvette Crespo to state prison.
